April 2017:  Humanscale, the leading global designer and manufacturer of products that improve wellness at work, has unveiled an innovative and engaging RE:CHARGE Café concept in the Brera district, for Fuorisalone.

Humanscale have explored the science of biological lighting and its connection to wellness; following the circadian rhythms, this lighting represents a step forward for mental well-being and the impact on physical health - further demonstrating the brand's commitment to design innovation, health and wellness.

Humanscale’s Acting Creative Director and Designer Todd Bracher, who is also behind some of the brand’s most recent designs, including Trea Chair which mimics the instinctive recline of the human body and the glare-free Vessel Light - transformed a local Milanese café on Via Solferino into the RE:CHARGE Café concept.

RE:CHARGE Café features a communal table with custom, state of the art charging stations with built-in biological lighting and a lush green, air-purifying wall, made possible by the pioneering vertical agriculture specialists Vertical Field.  Along with free Wi-Fi and a healthy bar offering specialised “Green Shots” for rejuvenation of body and mind, RE:CHARGE Café supports the harmonious blends of work, sociability, relaxation and recharge which are synonymous with the Humanscale brand.

Some think that great design is a balance between functionality and beauty, I don't believe this is the case. All of nature is beautiful, and at the same time all of nature is completely functional. This concept is core to the Humanscale brand and the inspiration for the RE:CHARGE Café in Milan, a space that embodies functionality, simplicity, and well-being, whilstat the same time is still very beautifulBob King, CEO and Founder of Humanscale.

The RE:CHARGE Café concept is also inspired by 'Engineered Nature', a recent trend identified and developed by London-based trend forecasting studio Franklin Till, drawing on human’s inherent connection to the natural world and the health benefits of being exposed to nature.

RE:CHARGE Café invites visitors to re-energise both physically and mentally - whilst promoting well-being through a carefully curated and researched space, educating and giving back to the design community.

Humanscale’s commitment to health and wellness at work is the basis for this concept. I’ve been visiting the Salone for nearly 20 years- jetlag, meetings, continuous exploring - puts strain on one’s immune system. We are offering an environment that is designed to retune your body’s clock and to provide an opportunity to experience some of the latest technologies and products we at Humanscale are exploring.’’ Todd Bracher, Acting Creative Director of Humanscale.

Biological Lighting from Humanscale

Light is invigorating, motivating, relaxing or calming. Light provides support for medical treatment, promotes levels of concentration at work, and enables people to decompress. A wide spectrum of knowledge concerning the biological effects of light is scientifically verified in studies. But how does the biological effect of light really work? What are we able to observe as people and what do lighting designers, architects and engineers have to take into account in the future for lighting design in homes, places of work and public buildings?

Humanscale’s vision is for all of our lighting products (architectural and task) is to have the "Rhythm" option available.  The nature mimic concept applies to Humanscale’s sustainability philosophy and commitment. Our goal is to make all of our factories, and entire organization, self-sustaining and positively impacting the earth.

At Humanscale, we're gaining knowledge from research and science on how to utilize lighting to increase levels of well-being. As part of our performance lighting research and development, we are exploring the science of biological lighting and its connection to wellness. We are committed to technology and design innovation as it relates to function and well-being and a means to better the human experience.

Humanscale’s Beyond Sustainability Message

A lot of companies try to do less harm to the environment in the most convenient and inexpensive way possible. At Humanscale, we believe that is not nearly enough. We believe that every organization needs to restore, renew, or revitalize their own sources of energy and materials, creating sustainable systems that integrate the needs of society with the integrity of nature. This is how nature works—a tree is self-sufficient and positively contributing to the environment— and it’s the only way we can ensure the long-term survival of our planet. We believe it’s our responsibility to make a net positive impact. We do so through using healthy materials, sustainable processes, and giving back.
